A Life Rooted in Gratitude
At 91, Marion reflects on her life with warmth, humour, and deep gratitude. She was born in Turner Valley, southwest of Calgary, where she grew up in the oil fields alongside her brothers and twin sister. Years later, her family moved to Edmonton, a city that would become a constant thread woven throughout her life.
In 1958, she married what she lovingly describes as “a terrific guy,” beginning a partnership that would span 63 years. Career opportunities eventually led them to Kelowna, where they spent 42 years building a life together before ultimately returning to Edmonton.
Today, Marion proudly calls Lewis Estates home.
The Moments That Shaped Her
When asked what influenced her most, her answer comes quickly. “When I got married, that really shaped my life,” she reflects. Growing up in a large, close-knit family, marriage represented the beginning of something new — building a shared life and creating a home together. “Being able to be on your own and have somebody else share your life with you. That was really great.”
She also carries immense pride for her parents, who immigrated to Canada from Denmark in 1926. Arriving without knowing English, they worked tirelessly to build a life for their family and create new opportunities for future generations.
“They did just everything for us,” Marion says. “I think that’s probably what I’m proudest of.”
Their courage, sacrifice, and resilience continue to shape the way she sees the world today.
What Brings Her Joy
Marion finds joy in both the everyday moments and the life she’s built around her.
“My first love is quilting,” she shares. Alongside quilting, she also enjoys needlework, reading, and working on jigsaw puzzles — hobbies that keep her hands busy and her mind engaged. “It’s just… me,” she says with a smile.
But more than any pastime, Marion’s greatest joy is life itself.
“Being alive. I love it,” she says. “I mean, what more could you want? I look forward to every day.”
Her outlook is grounded in gratitude for the simple things: waking up each morning, maintaining her independence, and staying connected to the people she loves most. With two sons in Edmonton and extended family close by, Marion is surrounded by a strong support system that means a great deal to her.
“I have so much support around me all the time, which I really like.”
A Social Spirit
After nearly nine years at Lewis Estates, Marion continues to speak warmly about the sense of community she’s found there.
She appreciates the variety of activities available, the friendships she’s built, and the ease that comes with daily living, especially not having to worry about what to make for dinner each day.
“There’s always someone around that you can talk to,” she says. “I just love people, and that’s what’s here.”
Marion describes herself as outgoing and someone who enjoys making others smile. “If I can make people happy, I’m good,” she says.
For her, connection and community are an important part of feeling at home. The welcoming social atmosphere allows her to maintain her independence while staying active, engaged, and surrounded by people she enjoys spending time with.
Looking Ahead
At 91, Marion is still looking ahead with optimism and gratitude.
“I’d like more than anything to have my health and be able to live to 100,” she says with a smile. “That’s my goal.”
As she prepares to celebrate another birthday this year, she remains thankful for the life she’s built, the people around her, and the health that allows her to keep doing what she loves. “I am healthy,” she says. “And it’s a great world.”
Marion’s perspective is a powerful reminder that aging is not about slowing down. It’s about continuing to embrace life with curiosity, connection, and joy.
