For more than two decades, the wooden Riverside Manor sign has greeted travellers along Old Hope Princeton Way. Hand-carved in 2001 by celebrated local artist Pete Ryan, one of the artisans who helped establish Hope, BC as the wood-carving capital of Canada. The sign has always been more than a landmark; it is a symbol of community, craftsmanship, and local identity.
Depicting two woodland creatures holding an oval with the Riverside Manor name, the sign reflects the spirit of Hope: welcoming, connected to nature, and full of character.
But as the years passed, the weather and environment left their mark. The cherished sign needed care, and our community stepped forward.
Restored With Care, Community and Craft
The restoration was led by Communities in Bloom, with the support and leadership of Victor Smith (Mayor of Hope). Many in Hope know Mayor Smith for his dedication to the town and for his hands-on involvement in preserving our region’s artistic heritage.
Under his guidance, the sign was carefully restored and refreshed using Optima Living’s newest colour palette. The goal was not to recreate something new, but to honour what already existed to preserve its history and ensure its story continues.
This project represents the spirit of Hope: traditions passed forward, pride in local artistry, and collective care for the places that feel like home.
A Celebration of Heritage and Community
The newly restored Riverside Manor sign was officially unveiled on Saturday, September 20, 2025. Residents, neighbours, families, and community partners joined together to celebrate this meaningful moment.
The day was filled with warm conversations and shared memories, a deep sense of pride in local heritage and artistry, and the signature comfort and hospitality that make Optima Living communities feel like home. The sign now stands once again as a welcoming beacon—fresh, revitalized and deeply rooted in who we are.
Honouring the Past, Strengthening the Future
At Riverside Manor and across all Optima Living communities, we believe in nurturing the stories that shape us. The restoration of this sign is not just about preserving an object; it’s about honouring the people, the history, and the shared pride of Hope.
The sign welcomes each person who passes by. It reminds us that community is something we build, care for, and celebrate together.
