WHAT IF...Trying something new wasn’t scary?

Posted on July 28th, 2025

What if the unknown wasn’t intimidating, but exciting?

What if your first painting, your first dance lesson, your first time speaking a new language didn’t have to be perfect—but simply fun? It’s never too late to learn something new, but fear often holds us back.

Marion, an Optima Living resident, stated, “you will never know until you try”. She had been interested in painting, and felt she had a 50/50 chance of finding her passion. She knew that either it would work or it wouldn’t, but she needed to try it to find out!

What if trying something new wasn’t about age, ability, or expectations—but about saying, “Why not me?” The greatest obstacle in us learning something new is often our fear of failure or the unknown. We are afraid to step out of our comfort zone, and it seems the more years that go by, the more difficult it is to try something new.

5 Steps to overcome fear and learn at any age

At Optima Living, we believe every day is a chance to challenge the ordinary with the extraordinary. Whether you’re 29 or 89, it’s never too late to try, learn, or start something new. Sometimes all you need is an outline of a few steps to get you started.

Step 1: Acknowledge the fear of trying something new

Feeling nervous is normal. Fear of failure or embarrassment often keeps us stuck. Acknowledge those feelings and talk with someone about that new thing you are dreaming about. You would be surprised how their enthusiasm will get you excited and help you set aside your fears.

Step 2: Reframe “What If” into possibility

Instead of “What if I fail?” ask, “What if I love it?” Trying new things at any age starts with flipping the narrative from doubt to curiosity. The more you can imagine the reality of doing something, the more you will find your mindset shifting and you will develop an overcomer mindset. If the very worst thing that happens is you don’t like it, you will be able to say you tried it, but you may surprise yourself with delight more than you could ever imagine.

Step 3: Start small—It’s never too late to learn something new

Begin with small steps. Want to paint? Buy a beginner’s set. Interested in dance? Try a beginner-friendly class. Lifelong learning doesn’t mean becoming an expert overnight—it’s about taking that first step. It’s something you do not have to do alone. There is rarely any new thing you would want to try that someone might not want to try with you! The realm of possibility is great!

Step 4: Surround yourself with encouragement

Join a group, class, or community. At Optima Living, we believe community makes everything easier—and more fun. You’ll be amazed how quickly fear fades when others cheer you on. People LOVE seeing seniors break through the realm of possibility! You are winning by trying! All you have to do is tell a few people about your crazy idea, and you will have more encouragement and help than you could have imagined. Try it!

Step 5: Celebrate progress, not perfection

Embracing new experiences isn’t about being perfect—it’s about growth, laughter, and discovery. Every attempt is a success because you showed up. If you venture to paint as Marion did, you might be amazed at the artist within that has finally discovered a place to be seen; or perhaps you are a remarkable dancer and you had no idea!

The bottom line: you’re never too old or too young to try something new

What if today’s the day you discover new friends, new skills, new passions—or a shockingly amazing new talent? The only thing standing between you and your next adventure is the belief that it’s possible. As you step into the belief of WHAT IF… magic will happen around you!
