Healthy New Year's Resolutions for Seniors
For this New Year, here are some suggestions for some health New Year’s Resolutions for seniors living in assisted living.
Exercise More
Make it a goal to exercise for at least 10 minutes each and every day. Staying physically active is important in maintaining overall good health and avoiding disease such as heart disease and osteoporosis. In addition, regular exercise will make you feel better and have more energy. Exercise can be as simple as going for a brisk walk and increasing the duration as it becomes more of a habit.
Exercise your Brain
Just as exercise for your body is important in remaining healthy, so is exercising your brain. An active brain helps to keep cognitive functioning high and help prevent memory loss. This New Years make it a resolution to play games or complete puzzles such as Sudoku that help to keep your brain sharp and functioning well.
Make new and revive old Social Connections
For seniors living in residential care services, there are lots of opportunities to forge new friendships, meet new acquaintances, and revive old friendships. Sit with new people throughout the day and at meals. Go to social gatherings and events that are offered. Email, call or visit with old friends. Making it a goal to stay in touch and make new connections can help with both previous goals as well!
Find a Hobby
This can be an old pastime, or something completely new. Make it a goal this New Years to revisit an old pastime, or find a new hobby. This could be knitting, painting, or even organizing a stamp collection.
Make 2019 the year to set and follow through on your New Year’s resolutions.
