Nutrition Tips for Seniors

Nutrition Tips for Seniors

May 29th, 2021

Eating is so important for everyone at every stage of life. Like the old adage says, you are what you eat. We would like to give you a few tips on nutrition to boost your wellness for seniors in our senior care communities and everywhere else.

Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables give us lots of trace minerals and micronutrients. Fruits and vegetables also give us fiber, and they nourish the microorganisms in our digestive tract. Anytime is a good time to eat some fruits and vegetables, and they make great snacks between meals.

Water

Make sure you are drinking enough. Our bodies are mostly water, and it is important to drink water during the day. Not drinking enough can leave you dehydrated and feeling unwell.

Calories

Be sure to get enough calories. Your doctor and your scale can guide you. As we age, often we are less hungry, but we still need enough calories for all your systems to work right in the body. Even your skin and hair will suffer if you do not get enough calories. If you cannot eat a lot at one sitting, then some good snacks include fruits and protein bars that come in a wide range of flavours.

Avoiding Sugar

Lots of us love sugar, but sugar does not give us much in the way of nutrition. Sugar may also contribute to inflammation, so cutting down on or cutting out sugar can make you feel generally better.

For those who live in our senior care communities, the meals that we prepare are obviously conceived with excellent nutrition in mind. But it is always a good reminder to consider your nutrition all day long.
